Tagalong guest.....

Dinner with an old friend....well, an old friend of Millyrose anyway but she likes me well enough, I s'poze, at least well enough to invite me as a tagalong guest.....great dinner, good wine, goooooood conversation (mem’ry Andy Griffith)...good time! Nice to have Sunday dinner at someone else’s house...no cooking, no cleaning, no leftovers....I don’t know why it is that I don’t like leftovers....well, most things anyway.....cold pizza makes a good breakfast ‘n chili seems to get better with age...well, it gets better if it was any good the first time around...I think if you strike the right balace with the chilie content, it just gets better with each re-heating...Oh, ‘n leftover turkey after Thanksgiving...makes great sandwiches but that’s only for a short time....anytime you have turkey more than once or twice a year, you’re going overboard with it....unless maybe you’re talking wild turkey ‘n I don’t mean the bourbon but the real wild turkeys that are roaming the highways ‘n byways of the USA t’day.... ‘course, most people don’t harvest them, at least not in public....the general public looks upon them as some kind of Disneyesque critters that roam the streets just to add some local color...they feel the same way about the deer ‘n the omnipresent coyotes....well, they feel that way about the coyotes until the coyotes make a meal out’a their pets....people like the mountain lions also until the lion makes a meal out of a jogger or hiker who just happened t’be absentmindedly taking up some of the same space occupied by a lion....people are funny....they want to save wolves ‘n think it’s a crime that ranchers want to shoot them...
‘n the grizzly bear....OMG! Let’s save Old Ursus Horibillis...that’s the latin name, y’know, ‘cause the grizzly has a lot in common with humans since they just might be the only animal that hunts humans for sport...I had a conversation with a professional bear hunter once upon a time...He used dogs with electronic collars to track ‘n tree the bear, then he showed up with his .44 Caliber Magnum revolver to shoot the bear out of the tree...I told him that I didn’t think that was very sporting of him, that he should probably arm himself with a couple of buck knives ‘n fight the bear that way....I told him that the odds would still be on his side but at least he would have given the bear a little chance. ..He told me I was crazy ‘n wouldn’t talk to me anymore....
I’m not a vegetarian....I quite like beef ‘n pork ‘n chicken....I like buffalo a lot also ‘n I used to eat a lot of rabbit when I was young but they weren’t wild rabbits..wild rabbit has a gamy taste that I never cared for....I eat a little salad now ‘n then but I never cared for wild greens...
guess I wouldn’t have done very well living off the land....

Home of the free lunch.....

The headline reads, “Immigration activists look to Obama”......and what it says is that a United States Representative by the name of Raul Grijalva wants the federal government to refuse to enforce a long-standing law regarding illegal aliens on the grounds that it is unjust and racist. I think what he’s saying is that we should throw out all the laws regarding immigration to this country and allow free access to anyone in the world who wants to come here. I believe that would make this country unique in the world. It goes without saying, of course, that once they are here, they would be entitled to all the rights and benefits of every other citizen of this country but if they happen to be ‘people of color’ (ie, any color not designated as white) they would also be absolved of any responsibility to actually pay for the rights and benefits of citizenship.
Representative Grijalva wants to overturn what he calls an ‘unjust and racist law’ and he goes on to call for the overthrow of the government that created this law. (I think that’s called sedition or it would be if he were a redneck racist. As a committed liberal, he must be a true patriot.)
The Reverent Al Sharpton, an outspoken champion of the downtrodden (remember Tawana Brawley) vows to go to Arizona as a deliberate lawbreaker to defend the right of illegal immigrants (?) to have free and unhindered access to the goods and services provided for and by the citizens of these United States. I’m not sure what this renown civil rights activist hopes to accomplish other than keeping his name in the game but the limelight ‘b’en berry-berry good to him!”

ending with a preposition.....

So, here t’is Saturday ‘n a beautiful day it is, all sunny ‘n warm...a few scattered fluffies just for the contrast, I guess....I tried to sleep in but the neighborhood chickens wudn’t let me...nice morning tho’ for coffee ‘n the SacBee on the front porch...flowers blooming, trees budding, weeds growing so fast y’can almost see it.....jasmine blooming on the side yard fence....if I wuz a lyrical poet I’d do sumthin’ about it....prob’ly just as well I ain’t....the world has too many bad lyricists as it is.....
The g’daughters are here t’day...Kellye ‘n Ashby dropped ‘em off ‘n disappeared in a trice.....if you ever wondered what in the world a trice is...it means ‘an instant’...
Anyways, I guess since da gurlz are here I’ll just have to bite the bullet ‘n go to the store for (gasp) ice cream....
maybe even stop for some freshly picked strawberries...
but ending with a preposition, I’ll tell you, it’s just sad what grandparents have to put up with....

Bakers Dozen.....

“You don’t get near nor farther nor closer than a country mile.....”

Well, a ‘country mile’ is approximately a mile ‘n a quarter if you’re the least bit curious ‘n I expect you ain’t curious at all about stuff like that....y’know, like a ‘Bakers dozen’ is really thirteen....altho I’ve been in a number of bakerys over the years ‘n I can’t remember when I ever bought a dozen donuts, rolls, whatever ‘n actually got thirteen....on the proverbial other hand however, I’m happy to testify that almost every Chinese owned donut shop I’ve been in more than once or twice quite often give me freebies....’n I don’t believe it’s just me....I think it’s pretty standard practive for them...
especially if you go in close to closing....(It’s better to buy some goodwill by giving some stuff away rather than tossing it into the trash)...That said, there’s a donut shop in the Cable Center in O’vale that serves up some pretty good product, especially the chocolate old-fashioned that Millyrose ‘n me are partial to....well, I’m partial to several varieties s’long as they’re donuts...
My diet doesn’t allow for many donuts, the sugar ‘n white flour thing, y’understand, but when I really, really want a donut, I’ll drive to O’vale to get one (maybe two or three) even tho’ I have to pass several other donut shops to get there ‘n even tho’ there is a bakery within walking distance that seems t’be popular enuff for people to drive to Old Fair Oaks to patronize them...personally, I think they’re over-rated ‘n definitely over-priced...
We only have a short time before the ‘Festivus Fair Oakus’....for many years, it was called simply enuff, the Fair Oaks Fiesta but in later years, they’ve been playing with the name....I think now they call it the Fair Oaks Springfest’...whatever, they block off the village for two days for a parade, a car show ‘n lots ‘n lots of craft booths selling whatevers....I think they generally have some kind of small carnival altho in recent years, it ain’t amounted to much but that’s alright with me...

Zest in quest.......

Way back when I was struggling to come to grips with the fact that I was going to have to actually work for a living since I had embarked upon a life-journey with Millyrose and rather cavalierly leapt into parenthood thereby leaving forever behind those careless joys of childhood, I stumbled into a job as a ‘route salesman’...
Looking back, it was interesting enough, I suppose, in that it allowed me to, in essence, wander along a prescribed route and meet with a number of people, most of whom were engaged in the process of earning their own daily bread by selling alcoholic beverages....twas there that I learned the aphorism, “Work is the curse of the drinking class.”.....
Anyways, the one really important lesson about work that I learned in this job was that you began with a book containing the names and locations of your customers...You began with the first one, put one foot in front of the other until you got to the last name in the book and then you went home....That is the true essence of most jobs and basically, that is what differentiates a job from a career. Y’see, a career is a life-consuming enterprise, an obsession in many cases that takes roots in childhood and never lets go...and it just wouldn’t do for a lazy man.....although, I suppose a case could be made that obsessive advoidance of work could possibly be classified as a ‘career’.....not that I’m making any judgments, of course....far be it from me to sit in judgment of writers who don’t write, artists who only talk about past or future projects without actually doing anything at all, or even (GASP) politicians who have elevated the art of doing nothing into an art form....the original ‘performance artists’ y’might say....

Drip, drip, drip.....

Monday, Monday....
Yesterday got up around 8O0......T’day is overcast ‘n balmy ‘n the temp ain’t gonna go that high ‘cuz there’s another storm a-comin’.....yessireebob, more rain ‘n snow on the mountain...but that’s alright....soon enuff it’ll be hotter than hot ‘n ev’ry day’ll be the same ‘n all the green grasses will go brown (California Gold) ‘n some fool’ll toss a cigarette (or more likely commint a deliberate act of arson) ‘n the sirens’ll scream while the Golden State tries again to burn itself up....(Hey, we don’t do half-way things here)...We blanket the mountains with snow, turn the valleys into lakes, then reverse everything with mudslides, wildfires, earthquakes ‘n drought....
Tuesday Morning.....
Woke up to the steady drip, drip, drip of a Spring rain...
One ‘a those soft rains, y’know what I mean....the gentle stuff that falls straight, no wind a’tall...The temp drops when it rains here....Oh, I guess it does back East as well but in mem’ry, East Coast rains seem a lot warmer than northern California rains....still, it ain’t really cold this morning but there’s a bit of a chill.....Dirk Verdoorn sez, “You’re gonna wake up in the ‘50’s ‘n it’s gonna warm up slowly but prob’ly not much more that low 60’s”.....That’s alright, the rain’ll keep things green longer ‘n I ain’t got around to cutting down the use’ta be knee-hi but now they’re growing taller weeds in my south forty...It ain’t that I really, really hate yard work, it’s just that I don’t much like it....it’s sort of like that teacher y’had way back when, the one that hated their job, hated their students ‘n piled on the homework so’s they didn’t have to really teach anything....it wasn’t that you actually hated that teacher, it was just that you tried your best to avoid them....that’s the way I feel about yard work....it’s just something that must be done ‘n if you don’t have the money to hire it done for you, well.........c’d be worse, I s’poze, in the old days before people had cars, they had horses ‘n horses, like dogs, consider the whole world to be their bathroom...
And if you’re won’dring at all how I got from Spring rain to horse shit, let me just say that it’s early, early in the morning ‘n I think I’ll go back to bed.....

A quiet Sunday morn......

Workin’ in the yard on a quiet Sunday morning....I don’t get a lot done but, on the assumption that something is better than nothing, I keep wand’ring outside pulling a weed here ‘n there, picking up pieces of dropped limbs, flotsam ‘n jetsam of an overgrown use’ta be lawn...yard..
green space...one fine day a few months ago I looked outside ‘n saw a young lady not of my acquaintance come into my driveway ‘n stride confidently toward the back forty of our humble abode.....I stepped outside ‘n asked her if I could be of any assistance at which point she informed me that she was looking for an entrance onto the adjoining phone company property.....I told her it was fenced ‘n she couldn’t get through, but if she went back to the street ‘n around the corner, she’d find an entrance....She asked me if that was a ‘woods’ at the rear of our property ‘n I assured her that it was indeed a woods ‘n a haven for all sorts of wild critters....I got one of those odd glances that I get from people now ‘n then ‘n she wished me a good day ‘n left.....I tell ya, you just never can tell about people....if she had stayed a moment, I would have told her about the ogres ‘n trolls ‘n the wicked witch but in this day ‘n age, the old tales have lost their magic.....
I don’t work too hard these days but I make up for it by not working too long at a time....I took a little break ‘n used the scissors on Willie.....I tried the clippers but he has so many clumps that they just don’t work...Roger the barber who has the shop around the corner told me I was doing a pretty good job on him but I didn’t believe him....on the other hand, when I told him that the dog groomers charged forty bucks to clip a little dog, I c’d see that he tho’t maybe he wasn’t getting enough money for a cutting mens hair.....
If I let Rusty outside while I’m working in the yard, he just sleeps in the sun...Willie is another story entirely..
I can’t work while he’s outside ‘cause I can’t keep track of him ‘n get anything done.....he wants to chase chickens ‘n squirrels or just wander around sniffing at weeds ‘n if I turn my back for a moment, he’s off downtown checking out the park or the coffeeshop.....n’y rate, I brought him inside so’s I c’d go back to work then I decided I needed a bottle of water...after that, I tho’t I’d check FB ‘n see what was happening....’n then I tho’t why not update my blog so that’s what I’m doing....so there you have it.....in the meantime, Millyrose is off to the Folsom Street Fair ‘n I got to git back to the yard....

He is risen.....

The third day......
of a Spring cold ‘n I hope it’s the last day.....The ubiquitous ‘they’ say a cold only lasts for three days...
hopefully, maybe it does.....I don’t know if that works for ev’ryone or only true believers....
‘N on the fourth day, a sign of life, a Spring resurgence, a hot shower which leaves one feeling...well, weakish...but renewed....but it ain’t raining, the sun is shining in a sky dotted with lots of clouds....some of ‘em, even fluffy but, wot the hell, it’s northern California ‘n you take what you get....at any rate, I’m going outside...gonna walk the dogs, go t’the store ‘n replenish my depleted stock of ice cream...among other things....

Thataway, or maybe thisaway.....

Ah, the Taxman cometh......
and yet again, Aprile is the cruelest month....or so sez durn near ever’ wit that cracks a joke about April 15...
But, truth be told (‘n that’s the best thing t’do with it cuz lying is just plain dumb, ‘specially when y’get caught.. just ask Tiger Woods) April ain’t a bad month a’tall....I mean, it’s Spring, the season of damp earth, new growth, new green, buds on trees, ‘n all that....young mens fancies, etcetera....lots ‘n lots of young ladies walking around with pregnant bellies ‘n (mostly) smiles, old farts out strolling looking a little less dour than usual....seems like almost every corner has a bunch of kids washing cars for good causes...
Time flies whether y’have fun or not....the definition of fun changes as y’get older...I’m talking dramatic changes here altho’ when you’re young, you really have no understanding at all of what’s to come...maybe that’s why so many oldtimers look at young people ‘n smile....when we look at children, those are nostalgic smiles ‘n they’re very likely genuine smiles of caring....But, maybe not...remember that proverbial other hand 'cause there’s almost always something on the flip side....’course, nowadays no one talks about the ‘flip side’ anymore....that’s ‘cause there ain’t no flip side on CD’s or tape (remember tape?)...back in those ‘golden days of yore’ there were records...’n they recorded both sides....well, nemmine, it ain’t important anyway....but the ‘dark’ side is always there just the same...when we’re smiling at what we term ‘young adults’.....you don’t necessarily want to bet the farm but we might not be laughing with you..maybe, just maybe, we might be laughing at the train wreck that we see coming full-bore down the pike....”Regrets, I’ve had a few, etc. etc.......”
Anyways....I started this at the beginning of the week ‘n now here t’is Thursday ‘n I ain’t even sure how it got from there to here so quickly....’n that’s what I meant when I said, “Time flies....”
Still, It’s a beautiful, quiet, sunny Thursday morning ‘n I’ve been out weeding (just a little bit) wearing shorts ‘n sandals ‘n a tee-shirt...not quite summertime yet but headed thataway..... Millyrose sez I got t'get back in the pool 'cause I'm losing my tan....
"First, y'say y'do, but then y'don't,
then y'say y'will, but then y'won't.
You're undecided now so
what're y'gonna do?...."

Life options.....

The Easter Blahs.....
I got ‘em.....I earned ‘em.....’n my stomach woke me up at two AM to tell me about ‘em.....-’n evidently I got nuthin’ better t’do than tell you about ‘em....what it is, is a lack of personal discipline.....at Easter-time, it’s all about See’s Marshmallow Eggs ‘n the disastrous effects thereof....(at other times of the year, it’s chocolate-covered peanuts),,,,,
During my long life, my lack of personal discipline has surfaced in myriad ways leading to almost epic encounters with various ‘n sundry epicurean delights and other, frankly more ridiculous endeavors.....I once had a tendency toward the impulse purchase of old automobiles....my poor old house is stuffed with an unknown quanity of mementos gathered, garnered, obtained over the years and forgotten....I avoid my basement whenever possible ‘n haven’t been upstairs for years.....I have no idea what may be there nor am I in any great hurry to find out...years ago I had a collection of comic books, mainly Classic Comics as my unreliable memory recalls, plus other books, etceteras....I kept them in a couple old footlockers ‘n left them (not unlike things my children have left)....when Mom ‘n Dad moved to California, a lot of my stuff was left in storage at my Aunt’s house ‘n it burned thus relieving me of the responsibility of doing anything about it.....I was thinking that if the over the counter purchase of dynamite was still legal, I could remodel ‘this old house’ by the strategic placement of several sticks of the stuff...
Ah well, life is all about options, ain’t it?

Brain bogglers on a Sunday morn.....

Here t'is, another Easter Sunday.....2010, omg time flies, fun or otherwise.....Well, Happy Easter to all the faithful 'n enjoy the day...'n to all the poor downtrodden non-believers out there on this cold, gloomy April morning, well why don't you just go back to bed 'n cover your head 'n pretend that no one'll ever find you....or take your case to the supreme Supreme Court 'n ask 'em to turn Easter Sunday into Spring Fling or something equally obtuse.....I don't know about the rest of you but I'm awf'ly tired of the secularists among us wanting to abolish the Christian God! They don't seem p'tickularly offended by a Muslim God or even the Jewish God which is a little odd seeing that it's the same God for all three religions but maybe that's just me...'n you never seem to hear anything at all about all the little religions 'n their Gods that exist in this world of ours....not that it matters of course, I'm just saying....And of late, it seems to be really popular to explain that the government of the United States was founded by a bunch of secularists 'n not as we've been taught for so long, A CHRISTIAN NATION! Our student Americans seem mostly gleeful when pointing out that our founding fathers were all atheists, notwithstanding that we have ample evidence to the contrary... what it mostly reminds me of are the writings of selfrighteous homosexuals who insist that most of historys most important people were closeted homosexuals....along, of course, with famous recently dead actors, artists, etcetera....
Liars excuse their lies by insisting that everyone lies...thieves believe that everyone steals 'n cheaters know that everyone cheats....thin people think that every fat person wants to be thin 'n vice versa....Life may indeed be a paradox but does that make a single dox less important?

Out 'n about.....

the byways 'n such.....
Here t’is....almost but not quite three in the AM....for two days now we’ve left ‘da boyz’ at home while we’ve gone gallivannting about the California countryside....they’ve been pretty good about it, haven’t eaten any furniture or anything like that (well, not that we’re aware of as yet, at any rate)....
Thursday we were wand’ring around Nevada City...prob’ly been 30 years or so since I was there.....for those of you who might not know, Nevada City is a once upon a time mining camp that became a haven for hippies back in the day.....narrow streets, artsy-folksy, high-ceiling stores run by silver-haired pot-smokers....prob’ly not all of them, of course.....had a great cup of coffee at a hole in the wall cafe (unlimited refills at a price of $.79).... beats the hell out’a Sac restaurants which mainly serve colored water for two bucks or more ‘n have an uncanny ability among their waitstaff of disappearing when your cup runs low....oh, also had some pretty good made in the back room ice cream at half the price of Coldstone Creamery.....while we were up there, I had the opportunity t’make ‘n toss a snowball (big whoopee, but I make it a practice t’stay off the mountain during the wintertime)...
Friday, we drove to Santa Rosa during ‘showery conditions’.....it ‘showered’ the whole way ‘n most of the time we were there....downtown Santa Rose was packed ‘n busy ‘n the steady rain didn’t seem to inconvenience anyone at all....had lunch in a smooth ‘n varnished, high-ceilinged, subdued pricing on the menu (doncha just hate it when y’can’t figure out what they’re gonna charge you for that extra glass of water)....the coffee was so-so ‘n I never got a glimpse of a refill which I didn’t mind so much (I prob’ly should’a had a beer which is what I usually do in Mexican restaurants)....Still, the food wasn’t bad ‘n the company was good ‘n JP beat me to the check....I struggled but gave in gracefully.....
The drive back to Sac which should have taken about two hours given that it was a Friday evening on a holiday weekend ‘n that there was snow on the mountain ‘n ev’ry third car had either skis or snowboards strapped t’the top took us a few minutes over three hours.....we spent at least an hour stop ‘n go in the diamond lane ‘n never did find out what was holding it up ( I told Millyrose that it should be called the ‘Zircon’ lane which ain’t that funny but it was late ‘n I was tired).....anyways I’ve digressed so much that I forgot what I was talking about which seems t’happen more ‘n more these days.....
As the late, great Red Skelton use’ta say, “G’nite ‘n God bless!”
